Teachers Day Remembrance

September 5, 2007

Heres to all the teachers in Vijaya High School who put up with us.

K.S.Chandrashekariah: His famous speeches after daily prayers are legendary. It involved exhorting us to study long hours (he made it fashionable to be a “kudumi”) and general issues that he hoped would make us better members of society. His constant grinding has definitely paid off. Just take a look at scores of his students doing well all over the world.

L. Hanumanthaiah (LH): For his stories about the USA. Boring at times, but in those pre-internet, pre-wiki, and pre-google days, it was the only source of stories. Rest in Peace.

P. Manjula (PM): Her “Yeno Katthe..” still rings in my ears. She called me her Chief Advisor because I had an opinion on everything. Fortunately she didn’t say those things when I introduced her to my son recently. These days the greeting is different. A warm hug and a pat on my back followed by “HenGe idhiyo Mari?”…

P.S.Chidambara Murthy (PSC): Taught us Geometry. His impeccable white shirt and trousers, his perfect circles on the blackboard.. not to mention his beautiful handwriting.

T.S. Mohan (TSM): In those days he was a very large man who rode a puny scooter… he had a unique technique in “twisting your ears”… slow and very painful.

H. Vijayendra Rao (HVR): Our much beleagured Chemistry teacher..joined school when we were in 9th.. 1977-78.

J.R. Seetharama Shastry (JRS): Still remember how he used to sit in class and teach us Shubhashitaas… A bunch of us used to go to his house for tution. Major attraction was the idly place close to his house.

R. Prahalad (RP): Seems like the favorite story about him from ALL batches was how he used to eat from our lunch boxes… The thing I seem to remember him by is that he was funny at times (in a queer way) but extremely tempermental.

K. Narayana Ballal (KNB): Used to teach us Sanskrit 2nd Language… had a mean pinch. A friend of mine to this day remembers a tweak he was given in his private area… PAINFUL !!!

N. Narayana Rao (NNR): Taught us Hindi…very “kannadiga” pronounciation of Hindi… also remember that his Bell Bottom was much larger than his waist. Always nattily dressed.

M. Narayana Rao (MNR): Physical Education. Many afternoons spent missing class and cleaning his NCC room. Without class teacher permission of course.

Y.v. Nagaraja Rao (YVN): English teacher. We drove him to exasperation… Still remember he’d stop teaching, sit in the chair and walk out after the bell rang. Marks would be given based on length of answer. People have claimed to have written cricket commentaries as part of the answer and gotten full marks.

PAK: History teacher.. Cricket in charge.. jovial and had the choicest words to say to you if you were caught talking in his class…

MV: Great Math teacher… very dignified and serious.

I passed out from VHS in 1988. Most of the teachers whom u have mentioned were with us also. Today, being a teacher myself, I draw my inspiration from all the great teachers we had at Vijaya High School. I am out of touch with many of my classmates. If anybody of my batch mate remembers me can please contact me at hemarghs@gmail.com

wasn’t there any person called MRS ?A lady teacher.
Today (15th sept),TOI carried an obituary column of hers and her period was 1948-2007,I guessed she must have been in VHS during your stay too.

  3. Vijay Says:

@Veena: Dont remember her… maybe she joined after we left..

  4. Raghu Says:

    Hi,
I enjoyed reading your blog, I passed out from VHS in 1996.
This is really great, makes me feel like I am in the class room. Interestingly, a lot of teachers you mention above were still there in 1996. I hope to visit VHS soon.
    Please continue this.

  5. Vijay Says:

@Raghu: Thanks for visiting… you must be the youngest of the lot… check out Vijay High Chronicles on http://bangaloreblues.wordpress.com . For some reason that thread seems to be more active….

  6. Raghu Says:

Hi Vijay, of all the teachers, I think PM looks the same, really awesome pictures from the reunion. It must have been tough getting people together but congratulations to you. Of all the teachers, I enjoyed PAK’s history classes the most, but no doubt every single on of them is a great soul. It is great that you were able to honor them and meet them. I should try to get some folks from my batch to meet up as well. Also, there are a quite a fwe VHS communities on orkut.com.

  7. KISHORE THEKHALLI Says:

I studied in Vijaya High School from 1981 thru 84 – my best days ever !!! HVR was our class teacher in 8th & 9th standards but PAK in the 10th (HVR had a serious accident and hospitalized for a few weeks in 1983) –
RP (R Prahallad Rao) passed away in the late eighties or so.
Did LH pass away ?? (he always wished one of his students get a Noble Prize in Physics !!!)
Visited the school last year and the play ground in the front has disappeared – and looks completely different !!
Lots of great memories – PSC’s son was my batch-mate.
Also , sadly 2 of my class-mates have passed away since – Rajgopal (accident case) – and Raame (Ram Prasad) .

  8. Vijay Says:

@Kishore: Welcome… VHS was indeed special.

As of today there are 200 comments and responses in the Vijaya High Chronicles on Bangalore Blues. I am yet to see a comment that says anything negative about the time spent in the school…

  9. KISHORE THEKHALLI Says:

Other teachers during my period (1981-84)

KVB (Karunakara Venkataramana Bhatt) – excellent Samskritha teacher – kind of short – used to struggle to get on his bicycle.

MN (Nagappa) – History teacher – with a kind of bad temper – used to shout at kids like – ‘Loafer ! – Katthe Magane !! –
    – I am not kidding !!! – he was ver skinny – and got the nicknake – Mule (bone) Nagappa !

SD (S Dattatri Rao) – award winning math teacher – a very strict disciplinarian – ramrod gait all the time.

TDS – drawing teacher – very handsome and talented – girls used to hover around him.

    Satyanarayana – attender – a gem of a man
(there used to be another attender who was a little older and queer looking with thick glasses – anybody remember his name ??)

SQB – English teacher – also used to run a bank for kids after school hours !

    ——-

PSC had a nickname – (Pencil Scale Compass) – because he used to teach geometry – was a sage like figure – NEVER seen him getting angry .

What seemed so mundane and common-place then seems so NOSTALGIC now !!

    • nataraj b s Says:

hi this is nataraj b s from vhs 86 batch but vhs in 1st stander ed.

the 2nd attender name is narayana.

  11. Vijay Says:

@Kishore: KVB and TDS joined when we were in 10th Std. I remember KVB, his first ever class at VHS was ours (10 D)… what an experience for him !!!. He wanted us to recite the Subhashitha, all the boys pretended we had sore throats and had lost our voices… the girls as usual were perfect students. Report went to our class teacher PM and the next thing you know we were being roasted over coals…
Your last statement What seemed so mundane and common-place then seems so NOSTALGIC now !! … so true.. you take these things for granted until you realize what a wonderful experience this was…

@Naik: I will mention this to some of my NHS friends…

  12. Viswanath Says:

I am in Jayanagar and HOW CAN ANYONE FORGET PSC,TSM, OUR PRINCIPAL, HM, SB, RCU, DJS AND OOOH MAN..IT IS COOL..A class leader who wrote female names on board first time in PAK’S class for which he appreciated (:) no hard feelings.
I am currently working as facility manager, did my MA.PA and my mail id given.
    pl do revert back.
    regards

  13. Dear All,

That slideshow of pictures brought in tears. Thanks so much for sharing it. I was in VHS, F section 1989-1992. I have very fond memories of the days there, and also many regrets – one big one that our Principal Chandrashekariah refused to let us go on a class trip in 10th, despite our many trips to principal’s office to convince him.

JRS taught us sanskrit grammer and subhashitaas really well and his command over english language was also very good. But he was typically late coming to class. HM taught sanskrit long prose. Was somewhat easy to score with sanskrit-to-kannada – we just wrote the same sanskrith word in kannada..
Our class teacher was SB – Susamma Babu – she had moved here from Kumarans I think in the early 80s. She was very kind and understood us in those adolescent years, and resolved the fights we had in class quite amicably. 🙂
I used to enjoy PAK’s history class in 10th – he delved deep into only a few topics, but told those lessons like a story with so much passion … that was just wonderful. The rotary club he had started was also fun.

SB and RCU alternated as our music teachers.

TSM had balded and used to come to school on a motorbike – invariably late. In 9th, we would rush into the class right after prayer, and wait at the windows for him to arrive – and shriek as loudly as possible when he changed from his helmet to fur hat! 🙂
SQB still ran a school bank for which we became eligible in 9th. KSS (thin short lady with quite a short temper, loud voice and a constant stylish hair style) was our kannada teacher – I rubbed her the wrong way with some “stupid” questions in 9th and she “quarantined” me for that ever since! 🙂

Many teachers’ children were in my class. TSM’s son Raghavendra (He became the school president in 10th). Physics teacher MV (??)’s son Nishant; and the famous BHS tution teacher BVN’s son Deepak and Deepak’s witty cousin Diwakar.

PSC had become quite hard of hearing and probably why also quite non-interactive. He would turn his back to the class and write on the board – from start of the class to the end. If somebody asked a question, he simply went back to the start of the topic and repeat the same words all over again!! We had made a song – rather mean, but it was fun then! 🙂
Bade mian PSC, aise na bano
    students kya chahe
    thek se suno

Thanks so much for starting this line of conversation. It brings back lots of lovely memories of those years. Time flies fast – that was nearly 16 years ago!

    Regards,
    Sumathi

  14. Vijay Says:

@Sumathi: Thanks for dropping into this blog…It was indeed a special time… in fact last week a bunch of us (classmates from VHS) were reminiscing….

  15. Deepak Dutt Says:

    Dear Vijay,

You are doing a great job, it was my dream come true to find this site which i was looking forward.

I would like to introduce myself , I belonged to 1989 to 1992 batch. I was in F Section always in First bench or Second bench. I remember there used to be heavy competition in studies especially in getting ranks. Always i remember Section D and Section F used to be at the helm of affairs.

Among the teachers of my batch I always remember TKP, because always he used be a person with a tie and and ironed clothes and walking seriously. He used to teach Geometry in class and was very punctual about derivations and especially = symbol .

I would like to remember SQB and her Pigy Bank and Philately club

In deed after seeing the good old photos and Sumathi Gopals letter it is not less than a movie for those who belonged to that section.

To share about PAK, if I have scored something in Social studies means all credit goes to him because in his Histroy class it was less of lecture and more of analysis.

I would like to make request for the batch 1989 to 1992 though your medium that can any of you send me the class Photo of Section F. I am looking for it which i feel sad to this day of not having taken a group photo.

I remember most of them names mentioned by sumathi. I would like to add to it a little bit of Bus journey incidents “Catching or boarding 3B bus was the most memorable one for the vijay high school boys and girls ” Most used to travel by Bicycle (BSA –SLR( girls) or Hero Ranger( boys)) and that cycle stand up there was one more place to remember along with that Tota puri Mavinkai Gaadi.

I reallly thank for all your efforts to bring most of the VHS guys under one roof.

I looking forward for more lines and more and more of my batch mates and other senior and junior guys who are eagerly looking in search of this portal of “Re- voking friendship in an new Avtar”

    All the Best to you

  16. Vijay Says:

@Deepak: Its people like you who make this worthwhile.. thank you for your wonderful comments…Good to hear from people who passed out after us… much after us.. in fact my first job in the USA was in 1987… 🙂

  17. Viswanath Says:

not to say…in MN’s class all the class fellows would count “actually that is the” rather than hear his lecture and take notes ??
viswa 1986 tenth batch..my batch mates, prashant prabhu, son of prabha eye clinic owner, bondie, srikanth, and others..bumgad

  18. Viswanath Says:

ARE THERE NONE WHO WERE IN THE 1986-87 BATCH X STD…BOO HOO HOO

  19. Vijay Says:

@Viswanath: Prabha Eye Clinic.. I know them all.. who was your classmate? Praveen?

  20. KISHORE Says:

Vishwanath’s comments about MN reminds me of another humor:
We used to muse that if MN was asked his name – he would reply as ‘The M The N’ (hope I conveyed it well).

  21. arun Says:

I passed out in 87, i was in “D” section.this perticular year our section bagged 7 ranks, if i remember balachander got the 1st rank.any body from that class.

  22. Sudhir Says:

I was a 97 pass out. My Class teacher was HSS (H.S. Sreeramakrishna). what a legendary character he was. He taught us philosophy, the art of leading life… which no teacher could ever teach in any subject that early on. Especially his empasis on ‘Manku thimmana kagga’. It’s only now at this stage of my life, i’m beginning to realize the gems he taught us..there is a HSS fan community on orkut. Join it.

  23. Jayashree Says:

    Hi there,

I just found this by chance and am really glad to have found it. It is really nice to see that most of the alumni of VHS have very fond memories of the time spent there. Speaking for myself, I passed out in 87 from the ‘D’ section – easily, one of the most notorious one there 🙂

Sorry Arun, cannot recollect you by name but nice to have met you again. As I remember it, our class was a little different as it was the only one where girls out-numbered boys. So, in the class panchayat elections, while all the other classes has ‘Girl Representatives’, we were the only one that had ‘Boy Representative’. THat apart, I have many fond memories – how can I forget PAK’s history lessons ( I still remember a lot of history) or LNR’s Kannada classes where most of the class got punished for not completing homework – and the punishment was to stand on the bench! Oh! what fun it was! Not to forget the unit tests and the weekly tests where the entire bench ended up getting the same marks coz we simply split up the portions amongst ourselves! And, PAK used to tell us ‘yenadru maadi aadre galaate maathra maadbedi’.

That was really fun… And this is a great way to remember those golden days!

    Cheers
    Jayashree

    • hema malini Says:

But I am sorry, unable to place you dear. With due apologies. Pl get in touch and my id is hemarghs@gmail.com
      Cheers

  24. hema rajesh Says:

I VERY PROUDLY SAY THAT BECAUSE OF MY TEACHERS AT VHS, I BECAME A TEACHER. I REMEMBER SQBS ENGLISH GRAMMAR CALSSES, RCU’S KABULIWALAH, WHERE SHE WOULD BECOME EMOTIONAL AND WE WOULD WEEP I HER CLASS. DJS MY FAVOURITE TEACHER WHO MOTIVATED MT TO MASTER IN BIOLOGY AND SB WHO TAUGHT US VALUES IN A VERY SUBTLE MANNER. EVEN TO THIS DAY, I ALWAYS TAK ABOUT MY TEACHERS WHO WERE KIND, COMPASSIONATE BUT YET STRICT AND MADE LEARNING A FUN FILLED EVENT. THANKS TO ALL MY TEACHERS WHO HAVE SCULPTED US TODAY FOR WHAT WE ARE.

  25. Vijay Says:

@Hema: Unfortunately in all our 3 years, SQB never taught us English… so we missed out on that opportunity… Please share your experiences as a teacher with us…

My contention has always been that teaching as a profession needs more people of dedication and stature… for instance you talk about Chandrashekariah with a certain awe… so to some of my professors at National College B’gudi…

Even to this day my Dad talks about his lecturers at Maharajas College in Mysore.

    • hema malini Says:

@Vijay: You have really missed her grammar classes. I dont know how I learnt clause analysis and sentence transformation at ease all because of her. Even to this day , I remember and am able to help the new English teachers even to this day though I have majored in Life Sciences. Learning was fun filled and is for life time

      • Vijay Says:

Please head to the ‘Vijay High Chronicles’ page on bangaloreblues.wordpress.com for more stories. I still run into KSC every other day when he takes a walk.

  26. KISHORE Says:

Yes, we can talk a little bit about National College B’gudi – because that was the preferred destination after Vijaya High School – there used to be endless discussions about which of the two National Colleges (Basavanagudi or Jayanagar) was the better college – most of my classmates ended up in B’gudi National college – the revered S Deshikachar was the principal then (1986) – K Ramachar succeeded him – equally revered was MN Gudi (even the most notorious students used to revere him) – Anantharangan (a strict brahmachari was our class teacher in 1st PUC) … of course the nationally famous H. Narasimhaiah was the president of the
    institution …

but today the ugly flyover in front of the college has taken away the old beauty of the college.

  27. Anjali Says:

    Hi Friends,

I am 97-98 10th std passout from VHS.My class was ‘C’ section.T.S. Mohan was our class teacher. Remember me sitting in the Last bench and studying constantly.

First of all I convey my thanks to Vijay for having started this blog.
Really the years in Vijaya High school were golden years of my life which i cannot forget . The lessons of life were learnt there. Wonderful and everlasting memories which can never be forgotten.

Mr Chandrashekaraiah, popularly called as KSC our guiding beacon was an unforgettable person. His long speeches and words of wisdom given after the morning prayers still rings in my head. They are worth even to this day

Who can forget RCU , Smt Usha, with het beautiful voice singing and making us sing in our music classes. Even her Grammar classes were interesting throughout.

HSS, Seetharama Shastry, dynamic Kannada teacher. He used to handle the recitation competition of Manku Thimmana Kagga and various other Kannada plays.

    TSMohan was our class teacher
With his trademark cap and miniscooter, being liked by one and all.

PAKs history classes held our attention till the end of the end. I still remember his analyses on world wars and other topics. They were very good.

I couldnt control my sleep during VL our geography teacher and NNR- Hindi teahers classes.

MA Gururajan, MAG our PT teacher wuld make us spend most of our time doing exercises instead of playing games.

other than these the teachers i remember are DJS, TKP , SB , MRV , LNR, SQB ,SG, HSD

Hey guys of our batch, please respond if u have recognised me

  28. Vijay Says:

@Anjali: Thanks for dropping by… we slept during NNR’s classes as well.. (actually we closed our eyes sheilding it from his wildly colored tight pants) 🙂

Lots of the teachers names I dont recognise.. they probably joined after we left… who knows they might have been our classmates 🙂

  29. Vishwas H.K Says:

Hi, I studied in VHS in the period 1988 – 1991. Lots of good things to say about VHS. The teachers who I adore are HSS, LNR, PSC, PAK. HSS and LNR were such great Kannada teachers! I learnt Kannada from them from scratch to be frank. In my 10th standard, although HSS never handled Kannada for my section (B), looking at my and my friend’s interest in Kannada, he would give so many tips and advice on how to do well in Kannada, etc. For the haLegannada sections, he had made elaborate notes which he had freely shared with us (although he need not have since he was not handling the subject for us). These kind of acts are what makes a good teacher a great one, in my opinion.

LNR was another gem of a teacher (he handled 2nd paper for me in 9th and 10th stds).

I am still in touch with HSS and LNR.

  30. Vijay Says:

@Vishwas: Thanks for sharing your experiences…dont know any of the teachers you mention above except PSC and PAK…

Always good to keep in touch with teachers…

  31. Jayadatta Says:

Great to read about my high school. Looks like I am the oldest on this list. I studied from 1975 to 78.

It feels like i’m reliving my high school days. Its one of the best schools ever!!! Its bringing back a lot of fun memories :))

SQB was our class teacher, K. Narayana Ballal’s son was in our class.

  32. Vijay Says:

@Jaya: Thanks for the visit… I think Nalini and Mukund are from the ’74-77 batch… more of their comments (and more stories) are at http://bangaloreblues.wordpress.com/vijaya-high-school-chronicle/

  33. Smitha Raman Says:

Hi – only one thing comes to my mind when i think about the high school days and this blog – WOW – Just wonderful and excellent. Thanks Vijay and all others. I am from 88-91 batch – F section. I am surprised none of you – seniors and juniors have mention ANF. She was our class teacher – classy looking – all the time. Can never forget her hairstyle and curls and the beautiful way she used to teach..
First day in high school was such an unforgettable experience – standup on the bench in chemistry class for giggling at HVR’s hair or rather the lack of it. and he trying to keep them in place..
cheers – and do keep this blog going

  34. Kala Rao Says:

Hi Vijay, A big thank you to you and to all others for relivening those wonderful memories. I am from 86-89 batch – E Section.
I still remember the wonderful way RCU – English teacher taught us poetry and prose. Very, very inspirational. She made sure we read and understood inbetween those poetic verses. How could I forget RR – Raja Reddy??? Gosh!! The way he used to sing “Daffoldils” – “Beside the lake, beneath the trees…… ” it sill rings in my ears… :). He had this peculiar habit of teaching poems by singing aloud and making us sing too……..
And of course the elections. I was the Girl Rep for 88-89 batch and had real fun delivering those speeches requesting for votes.
    Good luck Vijay !!

  35. Vidya Nagaraj Says:

  63. Ravi Says:

Nostalgic. I was in the 88-91 batch, in G section. I think our class teacher was the short, male Sanskrit teacher in 8th (forgot his name) and we had RP for 9th and 10th. ANF was the class teacher for F section ( funny how I remember that 🙂 ). I think SQB went on to become the head mistress a few years after I graduated. Who was the math teacher that insisted we vertically align the “equal to” sign? Used it much later in Latex!

Some of you may remember my more infamous classmates. Sri Guha, PT Mahesh, Shashi, Sirajuddin Sharif.

Would like to get in touch with people from my class/batch. Leave a reply here. Thanks.
